Staff Awards 2016
Most Effective and Engaging Teacher Award
Karman Chua (Science, SH)
“Mr Chua takes the initiative to delve into deeper concepts that may not be covered in our syllabus or have not yet been be covered in class so that we have a higher level of understanding and appreciation for biology. He also takes consideration into our ability and considers our interest and ability in deciding how much to cover in class. He takes questions seriously and thinks carefully before responding to us. He is a passionate and caring teacher who puts the welfare of students as the top priority.”
Wong Lilan (Science, JH)
“Li Lan's biology lessons are one of the most engaging biology lessons I've observed. She is a master of personification and story-telling in biology. For example, she employed the pathway of a protein molecule to highlight the purpose and functions of key organelles, and more importantly, to link up the various key organelles. Coupled with targeted questions, students were able to be interested in learning and building deeper understanding for the functions of the key organelles.”
Most Caring Teacher Award
Oh Wei Ting (Science, JH)
“Miss Oh is not only my chemistry teacher, but also a life mentor to me. Just like many other students, I also have doubts regarding my future subject combination in Year 5 and 6. Just recently, I approached her to ask her about my future career choice and possible subject combinations. I told her about my struggles in deciding between Biology and Physics. She explained what she learnt in Biology as a student, and advised me on possible career choices with the different subject combinations.”
“All students, including my classmates and I fear the examinations. Yet, prior to the examinations, Miss Oh would give us tokens of encouragement and motivation, such as small cards and sweets. This was so every single time we had an examination. Up to today, those cards are still stuck on my walls. She constantly shares quotes with us such as ‘think like a proton and stay positive’ and ‘keep your head in the clouds but your feet on the ground’, and she always puts her greatest faith in all of her students.”
Ong Chye Meng Fred (Humanities, SH)
“Mr Ong understands when we make genuine mistakes (like not handing up homework because we did not know how to do them), but he is firm when we are do not put in enough effort. Even with his busy schedule, he gives us timed practices and never fails to turn down other meetings just to be with us.”
“Mr Ong does not just focus on teaching what is in the syllabus. He shares life experiences that allow us to think about what we should think about as Geographers. He would always ask, ‘Open your eyes, do you not see Geography all around you? What about the way HDBs were built?’ To Mr Ong, there is always a geographic reason behind each question.”
